For some time now, guests at The National’s Black Olive Sports Bar & Grill have been asking “When is this going to open to the public?” The answer is NOW.
As of October 1, 2015, local Loudoun County residents, teachers, as well as our guests, can enjoy a fun, sports bar with great food, local Virginia wines, craft beers and cocktails. The Black Olive is now open Monday through Friday, 5 pm until 1 am and Saturday and Sunday 3 pm until 1 am.
Our Executive Chef Chris Ferrier has created a bar menu with tapas-type small plates, sandwiches, salads and desserts, along with a variety of appetizers that pair nicely with a reasonably-priced wine list and craft brews that our Chief Wine Officer, Mary Watson-DeLauder, has put together. Eight Virginia wines and two local craft beers are available at the Black Olive Bar & Grill, along with eight specialty cocktails and a full bar for whatever you’re craving.
Our Local Beer Cheese is hot, cheesy and creamy with a little kick from the local draft beer that is added. The homemade pretzels with salt make for the perfect dipping utensil. See Chef’s video to learn how to make this recipe.
On the healthier side, we offer Edamame Pot Stickers that are stuffed with healthy, vegetarian ingredients (scallions, peas and celery) that are hot, crispy and perfect for dipping in the Toasted Sesame Dipping Sauce. Add a cold Leesburg Lemonade for a snack by the firepit. The Leesburg Lemonade is a mixture of Catoctin Creek Rye, made in Loudoun County, Cointreau, Sour Mix and Sierra Mist.
Chef also shares with us his family’s secret Tomato Bisque and Grilled Cheese recipe for those cool nights. The soup has no cream or roux though you’d never know it, and the sandwich is made with buttered Brioche and Smoked Gouda. We like to pair this with a Merlot from the Loudoun County winery, Prince Michel.
Here’s a few more menu items to tickle your palate:
- The Short Rib Sammie sandwich, topped with homemade Red Onion Jam, Horseradish (for a kick!), melted Provolone on a Sourdough role, pairs nicely with the Virginia Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager.
- Our BLT Salad, hearty but healthy, has a combination of Baby Iceberg, Applewood Bacon, Vine-ripe Tomatoes, Red Onion, and Blue Cheese Dressing. We loved this paired with a Moscow Mule, a mix of Vodka, Ginger Beer, and Lime Juice.
- The Fiery Fish Tacos are made with a grilled white Tortilla, sautéed fresh Cod, topped with Jicama Relish and Avocado Crème. This pairs nicely with the North Gate Voignier, which has a light, citrus nose.
